Liam Vincent-Kilbride, from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, has been announced as the winner of this year’s Take the Spotlight competition.

The 21 year old performing arts student, from Newport-on-Tay in Fife, is in his second year studying musical theatre. He managed to bag the top prize, winning £2,500 for his short video.

The competition was open to anyone studying at one of eight conservatoires across the UK. Students were asked to share their experiences of life at a conservatoire in a 60-second video so it could offer insight and serve as inspiration to others.

When asked about life at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Liam said: ‘I wanted to study something I love and I am passionate about and a conservatoire offered the best support and resources. You are constantly on your toes, giving everything you've got and learning more every day.’

He continued by offering his advice to anyone considering applying to a conservatoire, saying: ‘It isn’t like a school, it’s a doorway to an incredible opportunity – take the leap.’

Louise Evans, Head of Adviser Experience at UCAS, said: ‘Liam’s video really brings conservatoire study to life. It’s clear that acting and music is in his blood and great that he seems to be thriving in this unique environment. If any students are considering taking this path, I would recommend watching all of our winning videos – they give a true insight into what the future could hold for budding performers.’

In Liam’s video, he describes how many of his heroes, including some members of his family, attended Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He talks us through some of the course content and shows a clip of one of his performances.

The winning video, along with work by the two runners up, David Sharp, from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and Sarah Lockhart, also from Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, can be viewed on the UCAS website.
